We live in a country where most of the population is from other places around the world. Many people come to Canada to seek a better life outside of their home country.
People leave their home countries for different reasons, for example, more opportunities, a safe place to live, better education, or a new place to start over.
Overall everyone has come from another culture when they move to another country People come here to start families and to start a new life. This means that you are either an immigrant coming into Canada or that you are first generations second generations, third or fourth.
Although we now all live in our country together there are some clear differences between generations.
Not only the age differences but the way Generations are raised and view situations.
There are many stereotypes of second generations getting it easier than the first Generations.
First Generation kids have to deal with their parents still adapting to the new society. Of how school works, how people act, how everything just runs differently.
In different countries, people wouldn’t have the same freedom that Canada gives to society here.
“My parents would get upset at me for wanting to go outside because I was a girl and it was dangerous it walks to my neighbor’s house to hang out” was explained by a high school student with immigrant parents.
First-generation kids have to handle living in a society with two different cultures to live with. The different views of the immigrant parents and the western world that were are growing up in.
Many first generations would learn off of crazy stories and lessons that our parents would tell us as we grow up about the struggles and heart ace they faced.
In a way guilt-tripping their children in doing better.
There are other stereotypes
For example, first-generation parents are more laid back, parents are more understanding, and they are less strict around different situations like dating.
Although that may apply to some second generations, there are a good amount of second generations that get the opposite of those qualities you would think.
“My parents are a lot more strict than normal parents because they lived a similar life to me. They know what goes on and the lies we are trying to pull” was explained by a Fanshawe Student when asked about how it feels to have first generations parents.
In the end, our parents are doing their best in adapting to the society we live in now and we all are just growing and learning in our own different ways.
