A decision by Whole Foods has sparked controversy , as they have prohibited employees from wearing poppies while on the job. This went into effect Nov. 2, after it was announced that changes were on the way. This has lead to outrage across the nation with groups and individuals deeming Whole Foods’ decision as disrespectful to veterans, claiming they will boycott the grocery chain.
Whole Foods’ made a statement explaining the decision, but many feel it does not necessarily answer why they enacted this new policy.
“Whole Foods Market honors the men and women who have and continue to bravely serve their country. We support Remembrance Day in all of our Canadian stores by observing a moment of silence on November 11th and by donating to the Legion’s Poppy Campaign. With the exception of those items required by law, our dress code policy prohibits any additions to our standard uniform.”
In a tweet early this morning, Premier Doug Ford called this “disgusting and disgraceful” mentioning how we should all be wearing poppies this time of year. Royal Canadian Legion branches from London have mentioned there are certain situations where individuals are not able to wear pin poppies. This includes young children at school who may hurt themselves due to the pin. They offer solutions to these groups by providing them with sticker poppies, preventing any chance of sustaining any injury.
An employee has also come out online explaining their experience when they put a poppy on their apron at work.
“The reason given was something along the lines of ‘well if we let you support this ’cause’ then it opens the door for allowing support for other causes and we just don’t wanna go there, so we’re saying no to everything, even poppies.”
The now Amazon owned grocery chain has stated they will still be honoring a moment of silence at 11am on Nov. 11, and have donated thousands to the Royal Canadian Legion.
