Moving out for college for the first time may be intimidating for some. Many first year students experience uncertainty when it comes to their choice for housing.
When it comes to student living, there are a variety of options to choose from.
On campus housing is usually the first option most first-year students look into. At Fanshawe College, students can choose to live in an apartment style residence or the townhouse style residence.
There are three apartment style residence buildings: Falcon, Peregrine, and Merlin. These buildings are equipped with:
- Four private bedrooms: bed, desk, chair, and closet
- Kitchenette: table and chairs, refrigerator, microwave, sink and counter space
- Living room: sofa and armchair, television, closet space
- Two 3-piece bathrooms: sink, toilet, shower
Anthony Fletcher is a Resident Advisor in the Falcon house, his job is to create programming for the students in the building and ensure safety.
“I’m attached, I don’t have to go outside. And for the other buildings, it’s not too far of a walk to get inside to the main campus
He adds that during the evening, Resident Advisors would do shifts so when anybody needed anything, they would be right there.
Kestrel court has townhouse style residences. These houses are equipped with:
- Six private bedrooms: bed, desk, chair, closet
- Full-size kitchen: table and chairs, refrigerator, chest freezer, oven, dishwasher, double sink and counter space
- Living room: 2 sofas and armchair, television, closet space
- Two full-size bathrooms + one two-piece: sink, toilet, shower with bathtub (in full size)
Anthony says that these townhouses are a step up for responsibility and provide autonomous advantages.
Off campus housing varies from one building to the next. There are many student housing apartments and townhouses available for monthly rent.
Foundry First is an off-campus student housing apartment that is located across the street from Fanshawe College. Mayank Kesarkar is a Resident Liaison. In addition to living in the building, he is a paid employee. He finds that the biggest advantage about living in the building is the level of independence.
“Living off-campus and living by yourself puts more responsibilities on your shoulders. It lets you really grow as a person and treat yourself as an adult.”
Leasing a student-house off-campus is the next advance to further independence. Alex Van Ankum enjoys the freedom of living in the house off-campus.
“It’s really liberating to be in a house without set rules. Only that you have to talk to your roommates to figure things out for yourselves because there is no mediator like there is on campus.”
He adds that previously living in the townhouse style residence on campus helped him comfortably transition to the independence of leasing a house off-campus.
