This year has been loaded with many great films already, but the best may be to come. A year that saw us return to cinemas will end with a significant end to an era, a considerable novel adaption, an original time-traveling horror concept, a fresh take on an old classic, and a universal collision course. These are five upcoming 2021 movies you need to see.
No Time To Die
Daniel Craig has been James Bond for 15 years. Since Casino Royale was released, Craig has become the character, and it will be tough to see anyone else play the role he has. No Time To Die is Craig’s last dance as he goes all out in one of the most anticipated Bond films of all time. The movie stars Rami Malek as Lyutsifer Safin, a villain who plans to cause world destruction with technological weapons. The film is also set to include multiple ‘Bond girls’ instead of just the usual one. This is shown off in the trailer as numerous women are given the shining spotlight. However, it is unknown if they all have good intentions for Bond. The film finally comes out on October 7th after the pandemic delayed its initial release, which was March 2020.
Dune
Film adaptions of popular books have been a movie mainstay for many years, and Dune finally will have its chance. The film is an adaptation of the science fiction novel by Frank Herbert. Dune is about a family that entrusts their son with protecting the galaxy’s most vital and desirable element. The film stars Timothée Chalamet in the lead role as the son Paul. The cast is an all-star class with Zendaya, Josh Brolin, Oscar Isaac, Jason Mamoa, Stellan Skarsgård, Rebecca Ferguson, and Dave Bautista. The film will receive an online and in theatre release on October 22nd.
Last Night in Soho
As a sucker for horror films, when one presents a unique concept, it interests me. Last Night in Soho does just that. It is about an aspiring fashion designer who finds she can mysteriously enter the 1960s in her dreams. She finds an aspiring singer and is immediately drawn to her life of fame and glamour but soon finds everything is not as it seems—her visions of the past start to crack and splinter into something darker. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Thomasin McKenzie as the two female leads. Former Doctor Who actor Matt Smith also appears in the movie. The film is set to release in theatres on October 29th.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife
After the failure that was the last Ghostbusters revival, this movie had to be perfect for fans. Ghostbusters is a series that many fans hold dearly, and screwing it up will only bring out the worst in them. Luckily it does appear this new take on Ghostbusters is going in a better direction. The new film borrows concepts from popular Netflix properties like Fear Street and Stranger Things, as the main characters are kids. Finn Wolfhard leads the cast of kids as veterans of these movies in Stranger Things and It Chapter 1 and 2. In the film, the kids find old Ghostbusters gear left to them by their uncle. This comes at an opportune time as their town becomes stuck in a loop of constant earthquakes despite not living near any fault lines. If you have seen any Ghostbusters, you know the root of the problem is supernatural. Paul Rudd stars as the adult supporting character to the kids, and if the trailer is anything to go by, fans of the classic should be very excited. There have also even been teases of classic characters popping up in the film. Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set to hit theatres on November 19th.
Spider-Man: No Way Home
Now for the obvious choice on this list, Spider-Man: No Way Home. This new Marvel film is as anticipated as any film in history as the rumor mill has been rampant about who could appear. There have been rumors of actors reprising their old Spider-Man movie roles like Emma Stone, Kirsten Dunst, Andrew Garfield, Tobey Maguire, Willem Dafoe, and even Tom Hardy. The rumors state a ‘Spider-verse’ will bring all these classic characters back into the fold. The most recent trailer supports that thought as Peter Parker, who Tom Holland plays, asks Doctor Strange, who Benedict Cumberbatch plays, to cast a spell, so everyone forgets he is Spider-Man. This seems to cause universal issues as villains like Electro, who Jamie Foxx plays, and Doctor Octavious, who Alfred Molina plays, appear in a universe they aren’t from. Likely, this universal shift could also bring the heroes of their universes along too. Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to hit theatres on December 16th. I am sure we will hear much more about this film before it finally releases.
