Soccer is recognized as a relatively low-scoring sport to most. The latest World Cup saw an average of 2.6 goals per game. The Fanshawe Falcons Women’s Soccer Team contradicts this stat and then some.
38 goals in 5 games. 7.6 goals per game. That is the pace the Falcons have kept this season.
Led by veteran Falcon Kayla McQueen’s 16 goals, their offence has looked unstoppable and has been a handful for any opposition’s backline. However, Maddy Michienzi, a first year student and midfielder for the Falcons, says the blazing offence comes from all areas of the pitch.
“Having a strong backline that we do have and having chemistry in the midfield [is important].” Maddy also gave credit where it’s due, stating that having a striker like Kayla is a “huge deal” for the team’s success.
After missing out on the 2020-21 season, Fanshawe has shown no signs of rust as they hold a 4-1-0 record with their last regular season game on Thursday.
The last game sees them take on St. Clair College, the only team in their division they haven’t beat.
“We’re expecting the win,” Maddy says. “Especially at home, Fanshawe’s never lost at home.”
Tied with St. Clair in the West Division standings, the win would see the Falcons take over the top spot and book their ticket to the OCAA playoffs.
The season-altering game takes place Thursday at 4 PM on Fanshawe’s home field.
