Christmas has been a traditional celebration for so many years and it has been a celebrated by not only christians.
There is more than 1 million muslims in Canada, who surely have their own celebrations and tradition but what do some of them do during Christmas time? Allawi Baaqil is a sunni muslim who has interesting answers to this question.
Allawi has been in Canada for 4 years, and like any human; we tend to follow traditions that we have always been surrounded with ; but Allawi has been celebrating the joy of Christmas day, considering it a traditional-cultural event. Allows mentioned that he loves Christmas time due to the fact that everybody is welcomed to celebrate it in their own simple way. He says that during Christmas time, he and his family put up a Christmas tree full of ornaments and lights; as well as decorating the house inside-out with colourful lights. “I always enjoy putting up the light with my brother as it has always made me feel home.” Said Allawi.
He also said that the elders in the family give money to the younger as a form of appreciation and love, the money is considered their Christmas gift. Allawi said that is very similar to their ‘Eid Al Eftar’ celebration (an Islamic annual celebration); where they hand children money as gifts.”It is like our Eid, it is the same but it is very similar, and I absolutely love it.” Allawi said.
Allawi also mentioned that he enjoys having a Christmas dinner every year with his friends which makes him feel the warmth of Christmas cold-snowy nights. Allawi’s best Christmas memory is family and friends gathering and speeding time together away from religion or cultural discrimination; where he finds comfort and his heart gets filled with warm Christmas vibes.
