The City’s Green Bin Program now has a new date with the project slated to start this Fall, having faced multiple delays since it was approved in 2020.
The program looks to provide Londoners with green bins meant for composting, having seen success in other cities in Ontario.
The department recently had the chance to show off some aspects of the program at the Lifestyle Home Show, where they went on to show off other upcoming projects.
Munna Azzam, a Community Connector with the City of London, helped show off some city-related displays, including the Green Bin Program.
“We’re trying to answer people’s questions related to our programs like the Green Bin Program, I’ve been working with the city when it comes to the forestry, department trees and forestry,” Azzam said.
Tim Conlon, a Planning Coordinator at the City of London in the Waste Management Division, says that we can now expect the program sometime this Fall.
“I’ve been with the program over 10 years now, our division originally started looking at the program when we started looking at what other cities had been doing by running a test in the Pond Mills neighbourhood,” Conlon said.
He said that the test went well which helped kickstart the program, as the division continued to work on the program.
One of the main obstacles facing the program was the pandemic, causing many of the delays experienced by the program.
“We have 13 of the 26 trucks required to roll the program out, but we’re still waiting on those final 13,” Conlon said.
“A lot of the issues we’ve faced have had to do with the supply chain honestly, similar to a lot of the automotive industry, especially when having the parts we need for the trucks being built,” Conlon said.
The program was originally delayed to Fall 2022, and then to Summer 2023, with it now expected this Fall.
