With the recent news of the CBC layoffs that were planned to begin this April 1st and still yet to come many people are curious about what this will mean for the journalism industry. Jim VanHorne, a local journalist with decades of experience sat down to give us his opinion on the CBC and the future of the journalism industry.
“In the CBC’s case they’re preparing for perhaps a shift in the political landscape,” says Jim when asked about the recent proposed layoffs. Jim also told us why this issue is important saying, “I think the CBC is more important than ever considering what private journalism has done in the past…. it affects things such as foreign bureaus and right down to the local level of reporting”.
The CBC has been around since 1936 with many people spending their whole careers working for the organization and now after the announcement of the company’s budget cut young aspiring journalists are questioning the future of their careers.
The proposed date of April 1st has come and gone but nothing has been confirmed to have happened yet regarding this budget cut and massive employee layoffs but there will most likely be a comment from CBC soon to come.
