Every Earth Day, London hosts a community-driven cleaning event throughout the city. This event, called London Green and Clean, relies on community support for its success. it begins April 12th, 2025. It works by having volunteers post about their area, and through social media, they ask for people to come and pick up the garbage in the surrounding area. It differs from other events in that there is no official sign-up. This gives flexibility to people who want to join and also brings a pointing to volunteer work that is not usually seen. Melissa, the event organizer for Bonabona, explains,”There is nothing officially planned; it is more to engage citizens of London and encourage them to get out and clean up for that day.” It brings some tension to signing up because Melissa has no idea if anyone will attend. However, the event has had a strong showing year to year, which signifies that Londoners care about the environment.
London Green and Clean differs from other cleaning initiatives because the interesting part is the limited time required for the clean-up. Most areas only ask for 20 minutes to an hour. The arduous task of cleaning for days is not an aspect of this event. London Green and Clean believes that 20 minutes is all it takes to make the Forest City look better to Londoners and tourists. Melissa also thinks it’s essential for Londoners to try cleaning up because “London is a big city, we have many visitors coming. So, when they drive to the city and see garbage everywhere, that doesn’t send a great message. So I think it’s important that we all come together, do our part. . . [w]e have to take pride in our city.”
London Green and Clean provides a sense of community by Londoners coming together for a greener city. For more information, visit their website at https://getinvolved.london.ca/londoncleangreen?tool=map#tool_tab.
