Racing season at Delaware Speedway is set to get underway in a matter of weeks.
Drivers from multiple series, including the super stock series, are preparing their cars and teams to hit the pavement.
“Our team and our program is at a spot right now that is second to none at the track,” says Ryan Dyson, one of the 13 other drivers currently on the roster in the super stock series.
Dyson describes last year’s race season as a “championship caliber season,” where he and his team placed fourth overall in his series with 569 points.
Although the season was filled with many high-points for him and his team, JRD Motorsports, there were a few that Dyson noted.
“We blew a motor one night and we blew her up real good,” he said. “We shot some pistons right out the side of her.”
Delaware is one of many tracks throughout Ontario that routinely bring out a number of spectators to each race. Dyson says that although attendance was low when he started racing, fans are still making the trip out to the raceway today.
“When we first got into racing I think it was sort of on a decline. I’m not 100% sure why. There just wasn’t much excitement around it in the province. I think globally it was, you know, still big.” he says.
He attributes the turnaround in attendance and what he calls a “resurgence of car counts” to new ownership at some tracks.
“Take a track like Delaware Speedway, for example. It’s just right outside of London. New owners bought it a couple of years ago and you know, put new pavement down, did all kinds of stuff, new lighting system, everything. I think they put like a million dollars (into) the facility.” says Dyson.
“When you bring racers out, it brings people out and they started putting more money (into) more big races and stuff, more to win and stuff and I think that’s really helped,” he says. “All those things collectively, I think have really sort of brought racing back on the uptick and I think it’s in a really good place now.”
Racing season at Delaware Speedway is set to start on May 9th, with the late models, super stocks, V8 stocks and bone stocks on the track.
