UWO has taken actions in order to provide a safer environment at night for the residence starting November 7th,2021.
Western University hires 60 new advisers that have just finished their training and they will be working over-night shifts at the Western Residence. The over-night shifts will take place starting the week following their reading week.
The University is working on providing a safer and more secure living environment for students, the action was considered after a police investigations of the rumours that were spread about online threats about sexual assault to the residence took place on September 13th. The University of Western Ontario has been training over 60 advisers to work over night from 8 pm to 5 am every night in order to provide extra safety for all residence in the university. The announcement mentioned that the number if advisers might raise up to 100 by the end of this month.
On September 17th, about 10,000 of students marched a walkout seeking a response from the University administration to the online sexual harassment . Many residents have not been feeling safe and comfortable in their living due to online messages from an anonymous sender threatening to harass the residents . Therefore, the advisers that the University has trained will definitely have a positive impact on the residents and their well-being.
Maya Singh is a UWO resident, and she has not been feeling safe with all the threats and harassment occurring, she says that she definitely will feel better with more security provided. “I am happy they added more security to the buildings, because going in and out at night can be really dangerous sometimes, but now I feel more protected.” Maya said. Maya also added that her and her friends that live in the residence have not been feeling secure. “We did not have the courage to go out alone at night because we never knew what could happen or what the consequences could be. That is why we are optimistic about the announcement the university has made because we are looking forward to feeling safe and secure again.” Maya added.
