The provincial government announced funding of about 62 million dollars for London City to create nearly 2900 new childcare spots. The government’s goal is to push the cost of childcare to 10 dollars per day by the end of year 2026.
“In our economy when so many parents are struggling, it was the right thing to do to work with our municipal and federal partners to bring forth a plan that will finally reduce childcare fees for generations,” said Minister of Education Stephen Lecce.
MP Ariele Kayabagha says in London Ontario at a time when inflation is making life more expensive, cutting these fees and putting money back into people’s pockets is really important.
“The demand for accessible quality license child care in the city far exceeds the supply so this announcement of almost 2,900 new spaces in our cities is not only incredibly welcome but is a wonderful celebration of investments in the youngest members of our community,” said Mayor Josh Morgan.
Minister Lecce said the provincial government has already been able to reduce childcare fees by 50% and will continue doing more to make it more affordable.
The funding is part of a nearly $13 Billion dollar commitment from the Federal and Ontario governments in order to reduce childcare costs by 2026.
