Concerns are rising as the weather continues to get colder and shelters start to get full. Many shelters are struggling to keep up as they fill up and many of London’s homeless population is being forced to stay outside in the cold.
XFM News spoke to Charlene ‘Chuck’ Lazenby, executive director of the Unity Project to understand the challenges the unity project is facing as temperatures drop and more people need shelter.
“The reality is that we don’t have enough space.”
Chuck continues to say “We don’t have enough solution and, I was just talking with one of our Frontline staff this morning about that kind of circumstance. That you know what, what’s it gonna look like this winter for us and I think it’s really important to acknowledge the moral injury that it causes.”
“Those front-line staff who have to try to find solutions for people who come in the door when they’re aren’t solutions to offer and so, you know, it is a struggle and it’s going to be a struggle as it gets colder and colder.”
Chuck then tells XFM “We’re worried that there aren’t enough resources in our community for folks.”
” You know, we’re going to see lots of digits and limbs potentially from frostbite, that happens. Nearly every year illness becomes more difficult to treat if you’re sleeping rough, things like pneumonia. Those kinds of things increase and become harder to treat.”
